There are moments in life when we pause and ask ourselves—
“What am I truly seeking?”
Is it success? Legacy? Family? Or something far deeper… something eternal?

The ancient narration by Shree Shukadeva Maharaj unfolds one such profound journey—a journey that begins with desire, but culminates in divine realization.

The Beginning: A King’s Duty and a Son’s Desire

After King Priyavrata renounced worldly life and immersed himself in deep penance, his son, Raja Agnidhra, stepped forward—not just as a ruler, but as a caretaker of souls. He ruled Jambu-dvipa with compassion, treating his subjects like his own children.

But even in a life of dharma, a subtle desire arose within him—the desire for a son.

Not out of ego… but out of continuity. Out of responsibility.

So, with sincerity in his heart, he went to the sacred valleys of Mandarachala Mountains—a place where the earthly and celestial realms seemed to meet.

There, he began his penance, meditating upon Lord Brahma.

The Arrival of Maya: When Beauty Tests Awareness

As Agnidhra sat in deep meditation, something unexpected happened. A celestial Apsara—Purvachitti—appeared. Sent by Brahmaji himself, she was beauty personified.

When Agnidhra opened his eyes, his meditation shifted. What he saw wasn’t just beauty—it was Maya, the divine illusion.

And in that moment, his words revealed something deeply human:

“Are you the illusion of Lord Vishnu? Why do your eyebrows resemble bows—are you here to hunt hearts like mine?”

This was not just attraction. This was the soul encountering illusion and mistaking it for destiny.

And like many of us…he surrendered—not to the Divine, but to desire.

Years of Pleasure… and the Silent Passage of Time

Shukadeva Maharaj, whose wisdom shone with divine brilliance, continued the sacred narration:

Raja Agnidhra, the noblest among kings, found himself completely enchanted—not merely by the beauty of Purvachitti, but by the depth of her intelligence, the elegance of her character, the freshness of her youth, and the gentle grace that flowed through her presence. What began as a moment of attraction slowly blossomed into a long chapter of shared life. Together, they experienced the finest pleasures of both earthly and celestial realms, dwelling in Jambu-dvipa for thousands of years as companions bound by affection and destiny.

In the course of time, through the womb of Purvachitti, Agnidhra was blessed with nine illustrious sons—Nabhi, Kimpurush, Harivarsha, Ilavrita, Ramyaka, Hiranmaya, Kuru, Bhadrashva, and Ketumala—each radiant with strength and divine qualities.

Yet, as silently as she had entered his life, Purvachitti one day departed, returning to the service of Lord Brahma, leaving behind her children within the royal palace. By her celestial grace, these sons were endowed with exceptional strength, noble forms, and natural brilliance.

Recognizing the unfolding of destiny, King Agnidhra, with wisdom and foresight, divided the vast lands into nine great regions—Varshas—each named after his sons. Entrusting each of them with the sovereignty of their respective realms, he ensured that dharma would continue to flourish across the world through his lineage.

The Next Generation: When Desire Evolves into Devotion

After King Agnidhra ascended to the heavenly realms, the responsibility of carrying forward the lineage and dharma fell upon his sons. In time, Nabhi and his eight brothers entered into sacred marriages with the nine daughters of Meru—Merudevi, Pratirupa, Ugradanstri, Lata, Ramya, Shyama, Nari, Bhadra, and Devaviti—each union harmonizing divine destiny with earthly duty.

Shukadeva Maharaj continued the narration with gentle depth:

“O King, among them, Nabhi—the noble son of Agnidhra—remained without a child. Though blessed with virtue, prosperity, and wisdom, his heart carried a silent yearning for a worthy successor. Yet, this desire did not turn him restless; instead, it drew him inward.

With unwavering focus and deep spiritual resolve, King Nabhi, along with his devoted wife Merudevi, performed a grand and sacred Yagya. Their worship was not merely ritualistic—it was filled with sincerity, surrender, and faith. With minds absorbed in devotion, they worshipped Lord Vishnu, the Supreme Lord who is the very soul of all sacrifices, seeking not just a son… but a divine blessing aligned with dharma.”

The Turning Point: When God Responds to Pure Devotion

Though the Supreme Lord cannot be easily attained through external rituals alone—through precise materials, sacred timings, perfected mantras, learned priests, or elaborate offerings—He remains bound not by procedure, but by bhakti, the pure devotion of the heart. For while rituals may seek Him, it is love that draws Him nearby.

And so, when King Nabhi worshipped with unwavering faith and deep surrender, the heart of the Lord softened. The Supreme, though completely independent and beyond all obligation, became inwardly eager to fulfill the heartfelt longing of His devotee.

During the sacred Pravargya ritual, a divine moment unfolded.

The Lord Himself appeared—resplendent, serene, and filled with a beauty that brought instant peace to the mind and joy to the eyes. It was not merely a vision—it was an experience of the soul recognizing its source.

King Nabhi, overwhelmed with reverence, bowed his head and worshipped Him in accordance with Vedic injunctions. Around him, the learned priests, their hearts soaked in devotion, began to offer prayers—not of pride, but of humility.

“O Lord, You alone are worthy of worship again and again. Yet, we confess—we do not truly know how to worship You. We simply bow before You, as this is all the great sages have taught us.

You exist beyond both Prakriti (material nature) and Purush (the individual soul). How then can anyone, bound by the limitations of nature, define You through names, forms, or attributes?

You are the Supreme Reality. Your divine qualities alone have the power to dissolve the suffering of all beings. Even if one attempts to describe Your glories, they can only touch the smallest fragment of Your infinite nature.

And yet, O Lord, such is Your compassion—that if Your devotees, their voices trembling with love, offer even the simplest gifts—a leaf, a drop of water, a Tulsi leaf—you are completely satisfied.

But see the innocence of our King Nabhi… Like a poor man standing before a wish-fulfilling treasure, yet asking only for a handful of straw—he seeks from You something as small as a son equal to Yourself.

And this is not surprising, for who can ever fully transcend Your divine Maya? Who can truly understand or control it?”

Thus, in that sacred space, devotion reached its purest expression—not in perfection, but in surrender… not in knowledge, but in humility.

The Divine Promise: When God Becomes the Answer

Shree Shukadeva Maharaj continued the sacred narration with profound grace:

“When the priests of King Nabhi, the noble ruler of the land, thus worshipped and glorified the Lord with hearts filled with humility and devotion, the Supreme among all gods—Lord Vishnu—moved by His boundless compassion, chose to respond.”

And then, the Lord Himself spoke—His words carrying both truth and divine assurance:

“O revered sages, your words are filled with truth, and your intentions are pure. The boon you have asked for is indeed most extraordinary—that King Nabhi be blessed with a son equal to Me.

But know this… I am one without a second. There exists none who can truly be equal to Me.

Yet, the words of the Brahmanas—who are My very voice—must never be rendered false.

Therefore, to uphold your truth and honor your devotion, I Myself shall descend—manifesting through My own divine portion—as the son of King Nabhi.

For indeed, I see no one else in all creation who can be equal to Me.”

In that moment, the infinite made a promise to the finite…
A promise born not out of obligation, but out of love—for when devotion becomes pure, even the Supreme chooses to become bound by it.

The Birth of Rishabhadeva: The Descent of Dharma

Shree Shukadeva Maharaj continued the divine narration with serene authority:

“Having thus spoken in the presence of King Nabhi and Queen Merudevi, the Supreme Lord—Lord Vishnu—disappeared from their sight, leaving behind not emptiness, but a promise waiting to manifest.

Pleased by the devotion of the great sages and the pure-hearted longing of King Nabhi, the Lord chose to fulfill what was most dear to His devotee. In due course of time, He appeared from the sacred womb of Queen Merudevi—not merely as a child, but as a divine incarnation destined to reveal the path of true Dharma and the way of the great Digambara ascetics, who walk the path of complete renunciation and inner freedom.”

Shukadeva Ji continued:

“O King, from the very moment of His birth, the child radiated unmistakable divinity. His limbs bore the sacred marks of the Supreme—such as the Vajra and Ankush—symbols of शक्ति (power) and नियंत्रण (divine mastery).

With each passing day, His brilliance only grew, illuminating all around Him. The ministers, the citizens, the Brahmanas, and even the celestial beings looked upon Him with awe and devotion, feeling deep within their hearts that He alone was worthy to guide and rule the world.

Beholding His extraordinary beauty, boundless strength, radiant fame, divine aura, and heroic presence, King Nabhi gave Him the name Rishabhadeva—meaning ‘the श्रेष्ठ,’ the supreme among all, the one who stands foremost in every virtue and glory.”

The Ego of Indra and the Smile of the Divine

In the course of time, a subtle test arose—not for the people, but for the ego of the heavens. Out of jealousy, Indra withheld the rains, leaving the land of Ajanabha-khanda dry and waiting.

But where ego creates scarcity, divinity creates abundance.

Rishabhadeva, the master of Yoga and knower of all realms, did not respond with anger or retaliation. Instead, He smiled—almost playfully—at the smallness of such pride. Through His Yogamaya, His divine power that governs all of creation, He effortlessly brought forth abundant rains upon His land, nourishing every field, every life, as if to remind the world:

The one who is established in the Self does not depend on external forces—He becomes the source itself.

Meanwhile, King Nabhi, whose heart had once carried a quiet longing, now overflowed with indescribable joy. For the boon he had sought was not merely fulfilled—it had surpassed all imagination.

In his son, he beheld not just a prince, but the very embodiment of the Supreme—Lord Vishnu—who had, by His own will, taken human form.

With deep love and reverence, Nabhi nurtured Him, every moment feeling blessed beyond measure. He watched, with a heart full of devotion, the divine pastimes of his son—each action, each smile, each glance becoming a source of spiritual ecstasy.

And in that sacred bond between father and son, the human met the divine… and was forever transformed.

The Ultimate Surrender: From Kingdom to Liberation

As time passed, King Nabhi began to notice something extraordinary—not just in his son, but in the hearts of his people. The ministers, the citizens, the sages, and even the common folk were all naturally drawn toward Rishabhadeva with deep love and reverence. It was not merely respect for a prince; it was the soul recognizing the presence of the Divine.

Understanding this divine will, King Nabhi made a rare and profound decision. Without attachment or hesitation, he crowned Rishabhdev as the King—the rightful protector of Dharma—and entrusted the kingdom into His capable hands, under the guidance of the Brahmanas.

Having fulfilled his duties as a ruler and a father, Nabhi chose the path that few dare to walk.

Along with his devoted wife, Merudevi, he renounced royal comforts and journeyed to the sacred land of Badrikashram. There, in the silence of the Himalayas, he immersed himself in deep tapasya and meditative absorption, worshipping the divine form of Nara-Narayana—the eternal embodiment of penance and righteousness.

Through unwavering devotion and inner discipline, King Nabhi gradually transcended the limitations of the material world and, in due time, merged into the very essence of the Divine—becoming one with Lord Vishnu Himself.

And one cannot help but reflect…

Who else could live such a life?

A king who ruled with righteousness, desired with humility, worshipped with sincerity… and finally renounced with complete surrender.

So pure were his actions, so unwavering his devotion, that the Supreme Lord Himself chose to become his son.

And who could be a greater servant of dharma than Nabhi? For it was through his faith, his offerings, and his reverence toward the Brahmanas that their sacred chants invoked the presence of the Lord Himself—manifesting Lord Vishnu in the very sacrificial arena.

Such is the power of devotion…
That when it becomes pure, even God chooses to become part of your story.
