Narrated by Rishi Maitreya to Vidura Ji,
The story unfolds a time when the prophecy of Kashyapa Muni weighed heavily on the mind of Diti, the mother of the Asuras. Constantly fearful of the ominous fate foretold by her husband, she gave birth after a full hundred years to two turbulent sons.
The moment of their birth shook the very fabric of existence. The heavens roared with unholy omens: Mountains trembled, the earth quaked violently, dust storms darkened the skies, and meteor showers streaked ominously across the heavens. Lightning cracked incessantly; eerie howls of jackals and owls pierced; trees were uprooted without a breeze; divine idols shed tears; and even the dogs wept and sang at once, sensing the disturbance in the natural order. The planets — Saturn, Rahu, and other cruel stars — reversed their paths and clashed in the skies, intensifying the dread. Everywhere, life recoiled in fear. It was clear: a new and fearsome force had entered the cosmos.
The firstborn of Diti’s womb was named Hiranyakashipu, while the one who emerged first into the world was called Hiranyaksha. Towering like mountains, their iron-like bodies seemed to touch the very skies. Earth itself groaned beneath their feet as earthquakes followed every step they took.
Freed from the fear of death through a boon granted by Lord Brahma, Hiranyakashipu quickly conquered the three worlds. Yet his heart beat only for his younger brother, Hiranyaksha, whose loyalty and affection matched his own arrogance.
The Rise of Hiranyaksha’s Pride
Armed with immense strength, invincibility, and a burning desire for dominance, Hiranyaksha roamed the worlds in search of worthy opponents.
Mace in hand, his fury unchallenged, he stormed into Swarga Lok, only to find that even Indra and the celestial gods had hidden themselves from his path. Roaring in frustration, Hiranyaksha plunged into the depths of the cosmic ocean, where he spent many years stirring the waters and seeking adversaries.
Eventually, he arrived at Vibhavari Puri, the serene underwater abode of Varuna, the lord of waters.
Mocking Varuna with biting sarcasm, Hiranyaksha challenged him to battle. Yet, wise Varuna, knowing the strength of this Daitya, humbly directed him towards the one true being capable of humbling his pride — Shri Hari, the Supreme Lord.
Pleased by Lord Varuna’s words but blinded by arrogance, Hiranyaksha disregarded the warning about his impending doom.
Determined, he sought out Vishnu Himself.
The Divine Encounter: Lord Varaha and Hiranyaksha
In Rasatala, Hiranyaksha beheld a wondrous sight —
Lord Varaha, the divine boar incarnation of Vishnu, lifting the Earth gently on His mighty tusks, rescuing her from the cosmic waters.
Scoffing at what he perceived as a mere “beast,” Hiranyaksha hurled insults at the Lord:
“O ignorant one! Where did you come from, dragging the Earth? Brahma entrusted her to us!”
“Today, by slaying you, I will avenge my fallen kin and restore our honor!”
Despite Hiranyaksha’s cruel provocations, the Lord remained calm, mindful of the fragile Earth balanced atop His tusks. Without retaliating, Lord Varaha rose from the waters, placing the Earth safely back into her rightful position, stabilizing her with His divine touch.
Hiranyaksha, enraged at being ignored, pursued Him like a maddened crocodile. Harsh words fell from his lips like thunderbolts, yet the Lord bore it all with divine patience.
Finally, after ensuring Earth’s safety, Lord Varaha turned to face his adversary.
The battlefield was set — the Devas gathered, the Rishis watched, the worlds trembled with anticipation.
The Battle of Cosmic Forces
Initially, the battle was fierce and balanced.
Both combatants wielded mighty maces, their blows echoing like thunderclaps. Blood mingled with the earth as the wounds on their bodies fueled their wrath. Techniques of mace warfare unseen even among the gods were displayed.
Observing the intensity of the duel, Brahma Ji, accompanied by the sages, pleaded with Lord Varaha:
“O Lord, please end this battle. Before this Daitya grows even stronger, before his arrogance further poisons the worlds, slay him. The auspicious hour of Abhijit has arrived. Act now, for the welfare of all beings!”
Hearing this heartfelt plea, the Lord smiled — a smile full of compassion for the innocent and resolve against tyranny. Accepting Brahma’s prayer through His loving glance, the Lord intensified His divine play.
Hiranyaksha fought ferociously. He unleashed a blazing trident, but Lord Varaha’s Sudarshana Chakra cleaved it into sparks.
He conjured terrifying illusions — storms, rock showers, demonic armies — but the Lord, embodiment of the eternal Yajna (sacrifice), easily dispersed the darkness with His radiant Sudarshana.
The Fall of Hiranyaksha
Realizing the futility of his illusions, Hiranyaksha, blinded by rage, lunged at Lord Varaha with fists of iron.
But with a single, effortless slap to the temple — not even a blow, but a gentle reminder of Divine Supremacy — the Asura’s strength shattered.
Spinning, gasping, defeated, Hiranyaksha crashed to the earth, lifeless.
Like a mighty tree uprooted in a storm, he lay fallen — his once invincible pride humbled before the Lord of all worlds.
The Devas and Rishis erupted in hymns of gratitude and joy:
“Blessed is the soul who dies at the hands of the very Lord whom yogis seek in deep Samadhi! Even in death, Hiranyaksha has been liberated!”
Brahmaji revealed that Hiranyaksha and his brother Hiranyakashipu were none other than the cursed gatekeepers of Vaikuntha, Jaya and Vijaya, temporarily playing roles in the cosmic drama to ultimately return to their divine positions.
Having restored peace to the cosmos, Lord Varaha returned to His eternal abode, while the echoes of His divine play remained etched forever in the hearts of all beings.
Closing Thought
The divine battle between Lord Varaha and Hiranyaksha is not just an ancient tale — it is a living mirror of today’s life.
When pride, greed, and the hunger for power arise within us, and we get entangled in the storms of our own making, we must remember: true elevation lies not in the display of strength, but in divine faith and humility.
The descent of Lord Varaha teaches us that no matter how overwhelming the crisis may seem, the hand of the Divine is always ready to lift and steady us.
If we recognize the Hiranyaksha within ourselves and surrender it at the feet of Varaha, the Earth of our life can once again become stable and secure.
In today’s struggling and competitive world, the message of this story becomes even more relevant:
True fulfillment of life comes not from the burden of arrogance, but from the light of devotion and surrender.
“The fall of pride is certain, but the rise of humility is eternal.”
