Why do we chase desires that never seem to satisfy us? Why do moments of happiness feel temporary, while suffering lingers? These existential dilemmas, though often buried beneath our modern distractions, have troubled humanity for ages.

Imagine standing at a crossroads—one path leading to worldly pleasures and another toward inner peace. This is precisely the dilemma Vidura faced in his spiritual quest. A wise and devoted seeker, Vidura sought the ultimate truth from the revered sage Maitreya. He posed profound questions that resonate even today: If God is beyond time, space, and suffering, why does creation exist? Why do souls experience bondage when their true nature is liberation? And most importantly, how can one break free from the illusion of suffering and attain eternal peace?

Vidura’s journey mirrors our own. In a world filled with uncertainty, stress, and endless desires, his questions reflect the silent inquiries of every thinking mind. As you read through this discourse between Viduraji and Rishi Maitreya, you will uncover timeless wisdom—answers that transcend ancient scriptures and find relevance in today’s struggles. The answers he received may just be the key to unlocking the peace and fulfillment you have been seeking.

Vidura, the wise and devoted seeker, sat before the revered sage Maitreya, his mind brimming with profound questions. Having listened intently to Maitreya Rishi’s discourses on the nature of existence, the Supreme Being, and the cosmic play of Maya, Vidura’s heart longed for clarity.

Vidura’s Dilemma

“Revered Sage,” Vidura began, “the Supreme Lord is said to be pure consciousness—without modifications, without attributes, beyond the grasp of time and space. Yet, He creates, sustains, and dissolves the universe through His divine Maya. How does He, who is eternally unattached and self-sufficient, engage in action? If God is beyond suffering and untouched by karma, then how can the play of attributes exist within Him? This mystery bewilders me, and I seek your wisdom to dispel my delusion.”

Maitreya Rishi smiled, recognizing the sincerity in Vidura’s voice. “O noble Vidura,” he replied, “your inquiry touches upon the greatest enigma of existence. The soul, which is by nature eternal and liberated, appears to be bound. This, indeed, is the unfathomable Maya of the Lord. Just as a dream appears real to the dreamer but vanishes upon waking, so too does the illusion of bondage and suffering exist only as long as one remains ignorant of the Supreme Truth.”

The Power of Devotion: Dispelling Maya

Vidura listened attentively as Maitreya Rishi continued. “It is true that such illusions do not affect the Lord, for He is ever established in His own divine nature. However, the individual soul, engrossed in worldly attachments, perceives itself as bound. Only through sincere devotion, selfless service, and unwavering faith does one transcend this illusion. When the senses withdraw from material objects and the mind remains fixed on the Supreme, ignorance dissolves like mist before the rising sun.”

Rishi Maitreya’s words struck a chord in Vidura’s heart. “Lord,” Vidura responded, “your teachings are like a sword cutting through the dense fog of my doubt. I now see that those who are completely ignorant remain in blissful delusion, and those who have realized the Supreme attain eternal joy. It is the ones caught in between—neither entirely bound nor fully liberated—who suffer the most.”

Vidura’s Quest for Divine Truth

Viduraji, eager to deepen his understanding, sought to comprehend the vast cosmic design. “Sage, you spoke of the creation of the universe. Pray, tell me, how did Brahma emerge? How did the elements, the celestial beings, and the earthly creatures come into existence? What is the role of the divine incarnations in shaping the cycles of creation, preservation, and dissolution?” At the beginning of time, from the Supreme Being emerged the cosmic intelligence—Mahad-tattva—followed by the elements and their transformations. From these, the great Virāt-Purusha manifested, the universal form whose thousand arms and feet encompass all realms. Within Him reside the Vedas, the celestial beings, and all forms of life. From Brahma, the progenitor of creation, came the Prajapatis, sages, kings, and all living beings, each assigned their role in the grand cosmic order.”

Vidura, ever the seeker, desired to understand the intricate framework of human existence. “Please narrate to me the division of Varna and Ashrama according to conduct and nature, the birth and actions of the Rishis, the division of the Vedas, and the path of Yoga, knowledge, and devotion. Explain the Sankhya philosophy and the sacred Tantra scriptures as spoken by the Divine. How does the propagation of various philosophies create disparity, and what are the means through which a soul moves across different states due to karma? Furthermore, what are the differing paths to Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha?”

Vidura, humbled, continued, “O Sage, describe the purpose of commerce, the principles of justice, the significance of Shraddha rites, and the role of celestial bodies in the cycle of time. What are the fruits of charity, penance, and righteous deeds? What duties must one uphold in times of crisis? Above all, what conduct pleases the Supreme Lord, and upon whom does He bestow His grace?”

The Path to Liberation

Maitreya, his voice filled with compassion, said, “He who upholds Dharma, serves others selflessly, and remains devoted to the Lord is the one who truly attains divine grace. Even amidst adversities, the righteous never waver. The knowledge of the Upanishads reveals the eternal relationship between the Guru and disciple, guiding the seeker toward ultimate realization. The soul’s liberation is not an accident—it is attained through wisdom, devotion, and detachment.”

Maitreya, with deep compassion, guided Vidura towards the supreme knowledge. “O Vidura, the path to liberation lies in surrender to the Lord. When one immerses oneself in the divine Leelas of Shri Hari, all afflictions dissolve. Listening to His glories, chanting His name, and selflessly serving His devotees purify the heart. The Guru, the scriptures, and divine grace serve as beacons, illuminating the way for those lost in the darkness of ignorance.”

Vidura, with folded hands, expressed his gratitude. “O Sage, you have bestowed upon me the nectar of divine wisdom. May this knowledge uplift all beings lost in the pursuit of transient pleasures.”

Closing Thought

The conversation between Vidura and Rishi Maitreya is not merely an ancient discourse; it holds the agony of the ‘in-between.’ Those who chase fleeting pleasures remain in illusion, while those who seek truth find peace. But for the majority, torn between worldly duties and inner awakening, suffering persists.

The lesson from Vidura’s inquiry is clear: the path to true fulfillment lies in spiritual wisdom, devotion, and selfless service. Just as Maitreya Rishi illuminated Vidura’s doubts, the teachings of the scriptures continue to guide seekers today. By detaching from illusion, embracing divine knowledge, and aligning with dharma, one can transcend suffering and attain eternal bliss.

Our daily lives are much like the dream Vidura spoke of—filled with transient joys and sorrows, appearing real but fleeting upon deeper reflection. Just as waking up dissolves a dream’s illusions, spiritual awakening dispels Maya’s deception. True happiness does not lie in wealth, power, or external achievements but in recognizing one’s eternal connection with the Divine. By seeking wisdom, surrendering to the Lord, and serving humanity.
