How does creation itself begin? What is the role of divine intelligence in shaping the universe? And most importantly, how can we apply this knowledge to bring order to the chaos of our own lives? Despite advancements in technology and knowledge, stress and dissatisfaction continue to rise. Why is it that, even with access to infinite information, we struggle to find real wisdom?

This age-old dilemma was once pondered by Vidur, the wise minister of the Kuru dynasty, as he approached the enlightened sage, Rishi Maitreya. Vidur wasn’t just seeking knowledge—he sought truth, the secret to transcending suffering and attaining eternal fulfillment.

Join us into the sacred wisdom of Vidur and Rishi Maitreya, exploring how the cosmic forces that govern creation mirror the struggles and solutions we face today. If you’ve ever felt like the pieces of your life aren’t coming together, this story holds the key to finding unity, purpose, and spiritual clarity.

Shri Sukhdev Maharaj, while narrating the sacred tale to King Parikshit, spoke of a profound encounter between the supremely wise Vidurji and the enlightened sage, Maitreya Muni. Residing in the serene and spiritually charged region of Haridwar, Rishi Maitreya emanated divine wisdom. Drawn by his saintly presence, Vidurji approached him and humbly inquired,

“Bhagwan, all beings in this world strive for happiness, yet true happiness eludes them. Their sorrows seem to multiply rather than diminish. What is the true path to transcend suffering and attain eternal peace?”

Vidurji, endowed with deep devotion, continued, “The unfortunate ones who remain averse to Bhagwan Shri Krishna are trapped in the endless cycle of sorrow and ignorance. Fortunate are the devotees like you, who selflessly wander this world, bestowing divine wisdom and solace upon the seekers. Please grant me the sacred teachings by which Bhagwan, pleased with the devotion of his devotees, manifests Himself and bestows eternal wisdom, allowing them to perceive His divine form.”

The Essence of Spiritual Knowledge

Vidur recalled the contributions of his great friend and sage, Krishna Dwaipayana (Veda Vyasa), who composed the Mahabharata to lead humanity toward Bhagwan’s divine stories. “The purpose of human intellect is to seek the essence of all knowledge—the nectar of Bhagwan’s leelas. Just as sugarcane juice is extracted to create the purest form of sweetness, we must extract the divine essence from worldly stories and immerse ourselves in the sacred tales of Hari.”

Moved by Vidur’s sincerity, Rishi Maitreya, recognizing his true identity as Yama, the god of dharma, born as Vidur due to Mandavya Rishi’s curse, spoke, “Vidur, you are eternally dear to Bhagwan and His devotees. Before departing for His divine abode, Bhagwan instructed me to impart spiritual knowledge to you. Thus, I shall now narrate the mysteries of the universe—the divine play of Bhagwan in creation, sustenance, and dissolution.”

The Cosmic Creation: Bhagwan’s Divine Play

Rishi Maitreya continued his divine narration to Vidur Ji:

“Before the creation of the universe, there existed only one eternal, complete Supreme Soul—Parabrahman, the soul of all souls. There was neither the seer (Drishta) nor the seen (Drishya). The mysterious power that bridges the two—that which enables perception and the perceived—is Maya, the divine illusion. Maya manifests in the form of action, shaping the fabric of existence. It is through this cosmic Maya that Bhagwan created the universe, weaving it with the eternal thread of time.

When the three fundamental qualities—Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas—became prominent due to the influence of time, the Supreme Consciousness, through His eternal portion, the Purusha, infused the seed of awareness within creation. Then, inspired by the force of time, from the unmanifest Maya, the Mahatattva—the great principle, the pure intelligence—was born. This Mahatattva, which held the subtle form of the yet-to-manifest universe within itself, was the primordial field of creation. Under the influence of the three qualities and the divine glance of Bhagwan, the Mahatattva transformed, initiating the cosmic process.

As the Mahatattva underwent further distortion, Ahankar (ego or individuality) emerged. Ahankar is the root cause of the three cosmic dimensions:

  • Adhibhautika (physical elements)
  • Adhyatmika (individual consciousness, including the senses and mind)
  • Adhidaivika (presiding deities, the cosmic forces governing the senses and elements)

Ahankar, shaped by the three Gunas, became differentiated. From Sattvik Ahankar, the mind and the organs of perception (Gyanendriyas) were born. From Rajas Ahankar, the organs of action (Karmendriyas) emerged. And from Tamas Ahankar, the subtle essence of sound, known as Shabda Tanmatra, was created, giving birth to space (Akash), which enables us to perceive the presence of the soul.

When the Supreme Being cast His divine gaze upon space, the union of time, Maya, and consciousness generated the Sparsha Tanmatra (the subtle essence of touch), from which air (Vayu) was born. The immensely powerful air, in combination with space, created the Roopa Tanmatra (the subtle form of sight), from which the luminous fire (Agni) emerged, illuminating the cosmos. Then, as Bhagwan’s divine glance blessed fire, it, through the interplay of time, Maya, and cosmic intelligence, transformed and gave rise to water (Jal), the essence of Rasa Tanmatra (taste). When Bhagwan cast His divine vision upon water, through the sacred confluence of time, Maya, and cosmic principles, the earth (Prithvi) came into existence, endowed with Gandha Tanmatra (the essence of smell).

Vidur Ji, these fundamental elements—space, air, fire, water, and earth—each inherited the properties of their predecessors, forming the foundation of creation. However, these cosmic entities, though individually powerful, could not bring forth the universe in an organized manner. The deities presiding over these elements, being fragmented aspects of Bhagwan’s divine energy, found themselves incapable of fulfilling the purpose of creation. In their helplessness, they turned towards the Supreme Lord in deep devotion and prayed:

The Devas’ Prayer to Bhagwan

“O Supreme Lord, we surrender to Your divine feet, which act as a refuge for those seeking liberation from suffering. Like an umbrella shielding from the scorching sun, Your feet provide relief to the beings tormented by the fire of worldly existence. O Bhagwan, this world, full of illusion and sorrow, deprives beings of true peace. Thus, we seek solace under the shade of the knowledge emanating from Your divine presence. O Creator of the Universe, Your feet, held within the hearts of devoted seekers through unwavering faith, grant them supreme courage. Yet, the path of knowledge and detachment is arduous, but surrendering to Your service makes liberation effortless.

O Lord, You have created us with the three Gunas to manifest Your cosmic play. However, due to our inherent differences, we remain disunited and are unable to create the universe, which serves as the playground of Your divine will. Therefore, we implore You, O Supreme Soul, to bestow upon us the divine knowledge and power of action required for creation. May we, by uniting our energies, manifest the cosmic egg (Brahmanda) and dedicate it to You at the appropriate time. O Parameshwar, please illuminate the path for us to fulfill our cosmic duty.”

Bhagwan’s Response: The Awakening of Virat Purusha

Rishi Maitreya then said, “When the omnipotent Bhagwan saw that these cosmic energies—Mahatattva, Ahankar, the five elements, the five Tanmatras, and the eleven senses—were unable to organize themselves to create the universe, He, in His divine compassion, accepted the influence of time and entered into the community of the twenty-three elements.

As soon as Bhagwan entered, the dormant forces of creation were awakened, and the elements, now infused with divine will, harmonized their separated existence. With His supreme power, He unified the scattered energies and made the invisible principles of creation active. Inspired by the presence of the Supreme Consciousness, these elements, through their collective effort, manifested the magnificent form of Virat Purusha—the Cosmic Being.”

Thus, the Supreme Consciousness, which is beyond time, space, and action, willed itself into existence through the Virat Purusha, the first manifestation of divine form within creation. The entire universe is but a reflection of this cosmic being, where all elements, senses, and deities reside in perfect harmony, playing their part in the grand symphony of existence.”

Closing Thought

“As the elements found purpose only when Bhagwan entered them, so too does the human soul find fulfillment only when it surrenders to the divine. In the presence of Bhagwan, fragmented minds become whole, scattered emotions find peace, and transient existence attains eternal meaning.”

Just as the cosmic elements required Bhagwan’s unifying force to fulfill their purpose, modern society, too, needs a higher consciousness to bridge its divisions. In an age where differences in beliefs, ideologies, and material pursuits create discord, the message of Virat Purusha reminds us that unity and harmony arise when we align ourselves with a higher divine purpose. The scattered elements of our lives—knowledge, power, emotions, and resources—find their true meaning when dedicated to selfless service and spiritual growth.

In the same way that the deities surrendered to Bhagwan, seeking guidance, we too must surrender our ego and align our actions with dharma (righteousness). By doing so, we create a world where differences are not seen as obstacles but as complementary forces working toward a greater goal—just as the elements did in forming the cosmos.
